ATOMIC HABITS BOOK STUDY AND PRACTICE - CHAPTER 1

The Surprising Power of Atomic Habits

KEY POINTS:

* A small daily improvement of 1% can generate a big difference.

* Constant small actions are important.

What is a Habit? A habit is an action that is done so many times that it becomes automatic. Because it is automatic, it frees space in our minds so we can do/learn something else.  Habits can support our well-being or not.

The Compounding Effect of Habits: Small habits add up. Every small habit that is done repeatedly for many years has a huge effect on our lives and on who we are.

Latent Potential Plateau:  Getting results takes time, we don't see results immediately.  Success is made by many small decisions over a long time. Patience is key.

Goals vs. Systems:

* The goal is what we want to achieve, our final destination.  A goal can give us direction.

* The system is the process in the direction of the goal, the steps that take us to the goal.  Systems make real progress.

* We don´t succeed in what we want to achieve because we focus too much on the goal and not enough on the system

* Don't focus on the goal, design systems instead.

The problem with goals

* Winners and losers all have the same goal. What makes someone successful is not a clear goal but a clear system.

* Achievement of a goal is done by momentary change. Like passing an exam, we only change for the exam and once the exam is done we don't put energy into learning more.

* Goals restrict happiness. There is an underlying belief that we will be happy only if we achieve the goal.

What is important is our commitment to the process, that is how we will make real progress.

EXERCISE:

1. Identify 3 habits in your life. Identify if they are positive, negative, or neutral, add a  symbol (+  -   =)  next to the habit.

2. Write your 3 New Year Resolutions, if you don't have it write your 3 goals in these categories: health, relationships, work.

3. Identify the underlying system of habits (3 to 5 habits) that could support the achievement of the goals.
